towns in Arizona with dates ranging from 1875 through 2011. It contains official
postal documents used in the daily business of the post office, correspondence from
and to the postmasters, ledgers documenting packages and monies mailed to and
received from locations around the world, and newspaper clippings of post office
daily operations and activities. The names of Arizona residents are noted in several
of the ledgers in regards to packages and COD records. The collection provides a
history of postal operations in Arizona and is of particular use to those interested

recounting his experiences in attempting unsuccessfully to return to Sonora in the winter of 1823-1824
through the Palm Springs area, and describing the mail route between Tucson and San Gabriel which was

sheriff, stories of outlaws and acquaintances, local history, and events around
Clifton. The photographs are chiefly portraits of family and friends from 1900
to the 1930s. Also includes a voter registration list of Greenlee County,

The correspondence in this collection provides a snapshot of the life experiences of Amanda Graham, a woman living in the Arizona Territory during the early 1900s, along with those of her family and acquaintances located throughout various regions of the country. Family news, health, and crop growth are a few of the topics discussed. The collection also includes a few pieces of business correspondence, such as bills and credit notifications. The postcards in the collection date from 1891 through the 1990s, but most of the items are from Arizona’s Territorial period through to the early 1920s. The collection includes real photo cards, greeting cards, and panoramic cards. The postcards in this collection are a visual demonstration of how Arizona has changed since the territorial period and many of the cards show buildings, people and ways of life which no longer exist. Messages on the reverse of these postcards comment on the experiences of inhabitants and visitors. A number of picture cachets are also in the collection, including: a cachet of St. Michaels College (postmarked Santa Fe 1889); a cachet with a map of Colorado and New Mexico (postmarked Lookout 1880); and a cachet for “A. Gusdorf Grain Mill (postmarked Ranches of Taos, 1888).
Letters in the collection include: a letter from a teacher describing Christmas celebrations and social events in 1907 in Alma; letters about the economy (lumber, farming, mining), horses and people and a postcard, from Copperton, 1905; a letter from a German speaking soldier at, Fort Stanton, 1886; a letter about Statehood Day and taxes (postmarked Lakewood, 1912); a letter about house construction in Madison; a letter saying “thanks for the tobacco” and about organizing a Breeder’s Association in Mesilla, 1906; a letter with details of raising and selling hogs, Ruidoso, 1911; a letter about bad condition of the church and school, Silver City, 1909; and a letter which is described as the writers “last correspondence from the New Mexico Territory”.
Other interesting items include: a cover from Gascom dated 1900, signed by the postmaster on the closing date of the post office; a handwritten postmark, dated 1878, Loma Parda; a handwritten postmark and letter from Turquesa 1881; a postmark from the KC and La Jolla RPO (postmarked Melrose, 1908); covers from 1874 and 1875, Santa Fe. | | | | Repository: | Postal History Foundation, Peggy J.
